How to Wait on God

Psalm 40:1 I waited patiently for the Lord; and He inclined to me, and heard my cry

Waiting on God is a topic that has flooded every podcast, devotional, and Bible study across the globe. So many of us want to know how does one properly wait on the Lord? Is He expecting something from us as we are expecting from Him? Is there an improper way to wait on God? How do we respond after waiting on God when He doesn’t answer the way we wanted?

Let me just start by saying, waiting in general is an unavoidable task. Be it saved or unsaved, nobody can escape the plague of waiting. We wait in still traffic only to find there was no accident holding up the lanes. When at a popular restaurant, we wait to be seated and enjoy a nice meal. While furthering our education, we study long and hard as we wait to receive our degrees and the list goes on. However, we get very impatient when having to wait on God. There is a posture to waiting that children of God should adapt. Our hope should anchor our wait. The hope that we have that God is trustworthy and He won’t start something that He does not intend to finish!

So the real question is, did He start the thing that we are waiting on? Are we going our own way and sprinkling Jesus in our efforts to appear like it is something that He started in us. As we wait we have to understand that God is expecting something from us! He’s expecting us to seek Him not just to get what we want but to get Him! If we are seeking correctly then we can wait correctly. This wait will alleviate waiting and being disappointed that God didn’t answer our prayers because it wasn’t in His Will for us anyway.

Now this certainly doesn’t meant that we may not feel some sadness if the outcome isn’t what we expected. What it does mean is when we do get a different outcome, the disappointment won’t overtake us. We won’t start to believe the lie that God is a satirist in our story. when that lie tries to drown our ears, we can fight with the truth of God’s Word. The truth that states He loves us, He’s a good Father, and His ways are higher than ours as well as His thoughts. Even the thoughts we have towards how our lives should be, remember His thoughts supersede that to infinity!

So, don’t lose heart my friend. Waiting on God can often look like a waste of time and this world will try to make you believe that He is not worth the wait. However, He thought you were worth the wait and so much more that He sent His Son, Jesus to die in your place before you even decided to accept Him as Lord over two thousand years ago. Now, I don’t know anyone that waited thousands of years on God and with that said, I’m sure you can find it within yourself to wait on Him. Be blessed!

The hope that we have that God is trustworthy and He won’t start something that He does not intend to finish!” “If we are seeking correctly then we can wait correctly.”
