How Can You Sleep?

Jonah 1:6 So, the captain came up to him and said, “How can you stay asleep? Get up! Call on your God! Perhaps your God will give a thought to us so that we will not perish.”

Oh, the story Jonah. A story we often judge ever so harshly. Why would Jonah run from God’s instructions? Why would he bring other people into his mess? How could he be asleep in such a tumultous situation? Before we rip Jonah apart, let’s evalate our own lives? Ask yourself if there are clear instructions God has given you that you do not obey. Have you brought people into your “mess” due to running from God’s instruction? Are you sleeping in such a tumultous time as this? The time of “anything goes.” An era of technology rapidly taking over our minds and controlling our day to day functions. A day and age where love is decreasing and petty is the new hate. Are you sleeping? Are you spirtually sensitive to the times or are you only thinking about you, your next breakthrough, come up, or as the young people say nowadays, your “bag.” Bag translates to check in the English language, haha. In all honesty, I can attest to sharing Jonah’s same running shoes.

I can imagine him being Usain Bolt of the Old Testament. Running as fast as he can, but why? We are good christians and good christians don’t run FROM God, right? Well, yes in theory we shouldn’t. However, there are moments that we think what God is asking of us or instructing us to do is more than what we feel we can accomplish. Now, in actuality it is true. We, on our own, are completely unequipped to fulfill instructions from God. What we forget is that we carry out the Will of our Father through Him and His Spirit and not of our own intellect and strength which very often proves itself to be futile. Considering the times that we are in, it is of most importance to be awake! We have very little time to be caught up in our own lives and resist the Will of God. We are here to spread His Love and point to Jesus. I have read of celebrity makeup artist who evangleize to their clients, doctors who practice in The Blood of Jesus as well as what they learned in school, and teachers who pray over their classroom inspite of God being taken out of the system. We all are not called to the pulpit, but we ARE called to make disciples. Those are His instructions!

The time to be idle, entangled with the cares of this world, and being allured by the lust of our flesh is over. There are souls at stake. It’s not enough to be mentally biblically literate with no proof of what we believe. Can you imagine someone in your job facing a storm in their life, you have the answer to calm the storm or calm them in the storm, and you choose to sleep? I get it. Sleeping is quietly attractive. You have so much going on in your life that there is no way you can help anyone else, but what if you could? What if God is desiring to strengthen you while He works out their situation due to your faith and obedience? Speaking from expereience, the more I sacrifice myself for others, my “storms” are simultaneously taken care of as well. It’s time to be awaken. It is time to be who God called us to be in whatever arena you are uniquely placed in, work it! Stop running, stop sleeping, call on your Father so that the people will not perish! Believe it or not, these ARE our instructions. Will you stay sleep?

Matthew 28:19. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Alright rose buddies! I pray this quickens you as it did me. If so, please feel free to comment and share so that others may receive these truths as well! Until next time, PEACE!
