When you think of the word “successful,” who’s the first person that comes to mind and why?
Success to me looks like freedom. Freedom to be who you are with no limitations. Being able to speak truth without fear keeping your words hostage. Knowing how to really enjoy life without anxiety choking the color of Joy away. So, my answer to that question would be nobody. Nobody that’s alive anyway. As long as we are on this earth, I fear success is not known but hoped.
I look at my father’s life and remember the bout he had with sickness. His discipline to remain joyful in the face of discomfort up until death was a success story that still brings me solace. Choosing to live despite pain and disability is not only what breeds success but what life is all about. It shows that we are more than what we are able to do and achieve. That life is more than the accolades we collect. It’s meant to live fearlessly, compassionately, and wholeheartedly to God first.
This is my idea of successful – to live without dying.
My father didn’t die in sickness; he died to live again. This is success.
Success in color.
