Promises of Peace

Proverbs 3:24 When you lie down, you will not be afraid; When you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.

Oftentimes, we forget how much God is married to the details of our lives. He cares about the very things we often overlook. One considerably neglected detail would be a restful night’s sleep. Our loving God sees us during those nights we toss and turn with yesterday’s concerns and tomorrow’s worries keeping us from His promise of peaceful sleep. This worry starts to wreak havoc over our nervous system and before we know it, rest has left the chat. We wake with up with the very angst we went to bed carrying not remembering that God is there to take our cares away. He wants to carry the load. So, why do we insist on lugging it around like a badge of honor?

Well, it could be patterned behavior. Most of us have spent more years without God than with God. So with this mindset, it’s easy to retreat to what’s familiar even when it’s not working or healthy for us. God has designed us to depend on Him and not in a viscous or pompous way but for our benefit! His compassion for us is why He has been our Help and Guidance when we are lost or feeling powerless. As children of God, we not only have access to a restful nights sleep, but it is our birthright. It is the trick of the enemy to make us believe that sleeping peacefully only comes when life is perfect or if we are heavily medicated. We do not need to depend on prescribed medication more than we call on God when struggling to rest at night. Jesus is the answer to soothe our pain both physically and mentally. He’s not some mythical being that only shows up to mysteriously write on our walls. Jesus is Jehovah Shalom – our peace in the sea of worry.

I pray you choose your life vest of prayer when the pain seems to hard to bear. Remember to meditate on what is of good report when the news continues to reflect the opposite. When you lie down, I hope you remember to lay your cares at the feet of Jesus and allow His Peace to carry you to a sweet night of sleep.
