For one of my birthday presents this year, my husband took me to dinner and a broadway showing of “The Wiz.” The cast did a phenomenal job across the board. Well, I was easily impressed due to never really watching it on television. Sure, I’ve heard of it and all of its musical wonder. However, it wasn’t something that I grew up watching as a household staple with my family. So, this was my only impression of the production and I thoroughly enjoyed it. There were a few things that stuck out to me. One of which I would love to discuss in this post which is the lion who needed courage.
Oftentimes, we can confuse flaming arrogance with courage. We mistakenly believe that the louder we are, the braver we appear. In some cases this may be true because the wrong perspective can give a false reality. The truth is, God does not need our courage, but our faith. It is then by our faith in Christ that courage is produced. Faith gives courage the legs to walk and be displayed properly in our lives. Courage from that space is how we are able to see the mighty power of God at work in our most weakest moments. The times that it seemed easier to give up, our faith impels us to be courageous enough to keep trusting God and see it through to the very end!
As we are approaching these last few days of the year, we have to understand that this next phase of life requires faith and not just skill. It requires a humbled heart ready to submit to God’s Will and not a clamorous spirit ready to fight at the drop of a dime. God doesn’t need our chest poked out in order for unbelievers to fear Him – He needs our knees bowed in prayer. Courage looks like praying for the very people who seek your downfall. Trust me, I wouldn’t tell you anything that I am not currently practicing. It’s hard, but it shapes our character into a true Christ-like example.
So, take courage on this day and beyond! Take courage and do not fear what man has to say when you are following the instructions of God. Lay down your pride that you mask as confidence in Christ. Hand over that idol of self in exchange for the only one and true God! Unlike the lion in the broadway showing, you don’t need to walk down a yellow brick road. All God requires is a humbled heart and contrite spirit ready to receive the fullness of His Spirit to empower you to live courageously for Him.
Heavenly Father, thank You for showing me the better to live freely. I can be free from fear and pride by submitting my entire self to You on today. Create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me in Jesus Name, amen.
