Disrupted Destiny

John 4:7 There comes a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus says to her, Give me to drink. For his disciples were gone away into the city to buy food

Oftentimes, we will find that some detours are necessary. The route that may be the most convenient in our minds may lead to an unexpected accident that can cause delay or even danger. Anyone who drives regularly knows how much of an inconvenience detours can be especially if we are running late and have somewhere important to go. In this text, Jesus actually took the shorter route. However, due to cultural reasons, it was not the most desired. The Jews took the longer route to avoid the Samaritans. Jesus took the the shorter route to meet a Samaritan. Yes, He was tired and some may even argue that his weariness determined the rest stop. I believe the compassion that He had for the Samaritan woman weariness is what led Him to rest there.

As the story goes, Jesus wasn’t the only one going out of His way. The Samaritan woman went out of her way due to feeling rejected by the locals. Unknowingly, she goes out of her way in an attempt to hide in shame to fetch water from the well while meeting The One Who can give her everlasting Water. As she draws from Jacob’s Well to get the water she originally came for, Jesus begins the conversation with her. I love how He started talking to her because He didn’t begin in pointing out her sin but using the situation to meet her need. A conversation tool we all could use when spreading The Gospel.

So, He asks her for water. He shouldn’t even be talking to her, but He was showing her how far He was willing to go for her. That there were no barriers that could keep Him from loving her. This points back to the scripture that states nothing can separate us from The Love of Christ. She notices that He had no Well to draw from which opened up the conversation to her salvation. Jesus tells her that He has Living Water that will quench every thirst. He also begins to confirm certain life details of hers that caused her much shame. The very reason she came to that particular well was the thing He used to capture her heart. Yes, Jesus is The Living Water and He saw fit to allow His Everlasting Water to flow her way that day. Due to daily rejection, the thought of someone actually taking time out to talk to her moved her – not to mention it being the Messiah. Jesus took another route that would’ve been a societal nightmare to spread His Love to the unlikely. He disrupted the norm to save a soul. What a disruption!

Let this be a lesson for us to remember how much of an impact a conversation has on a person. Remember to be led by The Spirit when having those conversations so that we can meet the the need and not solely preach at the sin. Yes, sin is the reason why Jesus came but we are not to dangle people’s sin in their face as conversation starters. Talking to people on there level in godly wisdom can win more souls than “preaching” at them in our flesh.

Heavenly Father, thank You for showing us how much You love us. You will go to the messiest parts of our lives to show us how powerful Your Blood is to cover every sin. Help us to remember Your ways when speaking to others about You. May we lean more on Your Word and Holy Spirit and not on our own fleshly disgust for the way people live in Jesus Name, Amen.

Be blessed guys and see ya in the next post!
