Wasted Wishes

Growing up reading about enchantment
Fruitlessly hearing about wishes being granted
Out of desires that were selfishly rancid
From birthday cakes to wishing wells
I was groomed to think that wishing meant me well
Society teaches positivity cracks the shell
That contains what I need to excel…in life
Then, I soon found out that it was all a lie.
That there is a better way to experience life.
Because wishes were great to imagine
But I have something more solid
I’m talking heaven bound and soul snatching
A joy from being rescued from a life so torrid
Hi guys! If you are reading this, you have made it to day two of the December writing prompt.
This title reminds me of that ole time song, “Row Row Row Your Boat.” I remember violently singing this song in the car ride home with my father. He allowed me to get every lyric out of my five-year old lungs before he popped my adolescent bubble. At the time, I did not realize why my father corrected me for singing that song. He was teaching me early to pay attention to the lyrics in the songs of which I choose to sing aloud. Like a caring father, he told me that life is not “but a dream.” That life is precious because of Who gave us life. With time and much prayer from family, I now understand the fallacy of this song and the misconception that wishes bring. As much as we would like to think, we are unable to wish our problems away just as well as we are unable to wish for the life we want. Truth of the matter is, we do not always know what we want. Therefore, we should be so thankful for Jesus. He took care of all the hard parts we just could not seem to get right. To have a savior and a friend all in one to go to for all of life’s ailments and joy!
Thank You Lord for showing me the waste in wishing and the fruitfulness in prayer to You as Your child. That wishing still shifts the control to me as if I’m creating the outcome. When in actuality, it is You Who holds my life in Your Hands.
